How can massages affect your sleep quality?

Posted by Simon Vandenworm on

Sleep is important for overall health. Lack of sleep can cause numerous health issues, including overeating, which increases the chances of obesity and diabetes. Poor sleep can also cause sluggishness which can lead to poor work performance. Instead of taking medications to induce sleep, a nonpharmacological alternative treatment is getting a massage.

What can a massage do for my sleep?
Instead of taking medications, a massage can be a safe and comforting alternative for sleep. Massages can cause the release of endorphins, which gives you a feeling of well-being and acts as natural painkillers. Additionally, this can cause a reduction in cortisol, which is the stress hormone. A decrease in stress levels and the feeling of relaxation can help you get into that restful state. Massages can also release muscle tension, which can lead to a reduction in muscle pain. When you feel comfortable and relaxed it becomes easy to slumber.
Where on my body should I focus my massage for better sleep?
Starting a massage with the head, neck, and shoulders is always a good idea because it is common for tension to accumulate in these areas. Muscle tension of the head, neck, and shoulders can cause discomfort, stiffness, and pain making it difficult to relax. Massaging these areas can help to relieve tension, improve blood flow, and promote relaxation.
The muscles on the back are also prone to soreness and tension. Massaging the upper and lower back can reduce tension and promote relaxation. People with muscular imbalances may find themselves experiencing lower back pain frequently. Regular massages can help with their discomfort.
Massaging the hands and feet will also help with sleep. Besides relieving muscle fatigue, there are many pressure points on the bottom of the feet and at various points on our hands. Applying gentle pressure to these locations can help relieve tension throughout the body.

A massage before bedtime sounds wonderful, but besides self-massaging or relying on a partner or family member, it may not always be an available option. If you benefit from massages before bedtime, it may be worth investing in a massage chair. Fujimax massage chairs provide different massage techniques and automatic programs to make it easy to have a good night's rest. With automatic body detection, they are simple to operate and offer additional relaxing features such as carbon fiber infrared heating and surround sound speakers for an immersive experience.
